According to the information that I have John Hickson was married twice – first to Margaret Prothro (dau of William Prothro) and then to Sarah Miller. My understanding is that John Hickson (1803-1863) and Sarah Miller Hickson (1831-1912) are buried in Mt. Arnon Cemetary.
In 1850, I find only two John Hickson’s living in Barnwell Co.,
South Carolina
- John Hixon age 47 (b. abt 1803)
- Sarah age 19 (b. abt 1831)
- Whitemarsh (male) age 19 (b. abt 1831)
- Penweatherber (?) (female) age 13 (b. abt 1837)
Source Citation: Year: 1850; Census Place: America, Barnwell, South Carolina; Roll: M432_849; Page: 469; Image: 289.
Also in the 1850 census Barnwell Co., South Carolina census, I find:
- John Hickson, Jr. age 25 (b. abt 1825)
- Nancy age 24 (b. abt 1826)
- Furman (male) age 7 (b. abt 1843)
In 1860 Barnwell Co., South Carolina, we find again John Hickson, Sr.
- John Hickson age 55 (b. abt 1805)
- Sarah A. age 27 (b. abt 1833)
- Josephine age 9 (b. abt 1851)
- Esther V. age 5 (b. abt 1855)
- Margaret J. age 3 (b. abt 1857)
So far no problems or puzzles here, but then I found the following listings in the South Carolina Baptist Marriages and Deaths
Source: Ancestry.com. South Carolina Baptist Marriages and Deaths, 1835-65 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: MyFamily.com, Inc., 1998. Original data: Holcomb, Brent H.. Marriage and Death Notices from Baptist Newspapers of South Carolina, 1835-1836. Spartanburg, SC, USA: Reprint, Co., 1996.

Issue of February 9, 1853
Died, at the residence of her husband, in Barnwell District, January 7th, 1853, Mrs. Sarah Ann Hickson, wife of Mr. John Hickson… At the time of her death, her husband was absent in Florida. The deceased was the only daughter of Rev. W. Brooker, and a member of the Aiken Baptist Church…aged only 21 years, 2 months and 10 days…left one child, an infant daughter.…
The first two entries above indicate that Margaret (Prothro) Hickson died in 1835 after giving birth. The second two entries indicate that John Hickson married Sarah Ann Brooker (not Miller) in 1849 and that this Sarah died in 1853. These are the only entries for John Hickson that I find in this database.
The conclusion that I come to is that John Hickson was married not twice, but three times. Does anyone else have any other information on John Hickson and his marriages?
