Della (Gaume) DeBacker c. 1914
Della Gaume was born on May 21, 1868 in Canton, Ohio.1 She was the daughter of Francis Gaume and Della Pickering. She was baptized on May 31, 1868 in St. Louis Catholic Church, Louisville, Ohio.2 She married August Vital Francois Joseph DeBacker, son of Vital Eugene Louis DeBacker and Hortence DeDonder, on January 6, 1887 in St Marys, Pottawatomie County, Kansas; Sponsors: Camillus Pessemier & Maria DeDonder. She died on October 3, 1923 in St Marys at age 55.1
It appears that Della's mother died only a few days after she was born. According to a pension request filed by Francis Gaume's second wife some fifty years after the fact, Della's mother's maiden name was "Pickering" and that Francis Gaume and Della Pickering were married around 1867 in the state of Wisconsin. Della, the daughter, was raised by her grandmother, Elise (Faiver) Gaume; the two appearing together in both the 1870 and 1880 US census for Nimishillen Twnsp., Stark Co., Ohio. It is unclear as to where Francis Gaume was during the time between the death of his first wife in 1868 and through out the decade of the 1870's, but it is fairly certain that sometime around 1883 both father and daughter had relocated to Kansas. By this time a number of relatives had also moved west from Ohio. Della Gaume married Dr. August DeBacker in 1887 at the age of 19. She appeared on the census of 1870 in the household of Marie Elise Faiver in Louisville, Stark County, Ohio.3 She appeared on the census of 1880 in the household of Marie Elise Faiver in Louisville.4 Her married name was DeBacker. She and August Vital Francois Joseph DeBacker appeared on the census of 1900 in St Marys.5 She and August Vital Francois Joseph DeBacker appeared on the census of 1910 in St Marys.6

Gaume/Favier Line
Francis Gaume was born on March 12, 1843 in Louisville, Stark County, Ohio. He was the son of Jean Baptiste Francois Xavier Jeanin-Gaume and Marie Elise Faiver. He married Della Pickering in 1867 in Wisconsin.1,2 He married Augustina Blanchard, daughter of Lawrence Blanchard and Marguerite Duplain, on July 12, 1871 in Napoleon, Holmes County, Ohio; From Declaration For Widow's Pension dated Oct. 17, 1917 "That she was married to said soldier (or sailor) Francis Gaume July 12, 1871 under the name Justine Blanchard at Napoleon, Ohio by Father Amo; that she had not been previously married" Note: Given her birth year as 1856 this would mean that Justine was 14 years old at time of marriage. He died on October 9, 1917 in National Home, Kansas, at age 74.3,4 He was buried on October 9, 1917 in Leavenworth National Cemetery (Plot: 33 4 24), Kansas.
Francis Gaume appeared on the census of 1850 in the household of Francis Gaume and Elise Gaume in Nimishillen Twnshp, Stark County, Ohio.5 He appeared on the census of 1860 in the household of Francis Gaume and Elise Gaume in Nimishillen Twnshp.6 He was a farmhand in Stark County, Ohio, in 1860. Francis Gaume was also known as Frank Gome. He served in Company "I" 19th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Ohio, from October 3, 1862 to July 22, 1863.3,7,8,9 On October 3, 1862, Francis Gaume enlisted under the name Frank Gaume at the age of 17 as a Private at Mansfield, Ohio in Company "I" of the 19th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry (OVI). During this time of the Civil War, the state of Ohio was in a panic over the possibility that Confederate forces would soon invade. The Governor of Ohio had offered a bonus for volunteers and several communities in Ohio, in addition, offered added bonuses. Added up the bonuses ranged from anywhere from less than a hundred dollars to as high as $500. Well-to-do young men wishing to avoid service were allowed to pay stand-ins to take their place in the draft. This was to be first of two enlistment's for Frank Gaume. He became what was known during the war as a "repeater". From A Compendium of the War of the Rebellion by Frank Dyer (c. 1890), I was able to follow the progress of both units that Frank Gaume served in. On October 8th, 1862, only a few short days after his enlistment, his unit the 19th OVI was in reserve at the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky. During this time the 19th OVI was attached to the11th Brigade, 5th Division, 2nd Corps, Army of the Ohio, to November, 1862. It transferred to the 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, Left Wing 14th Army Corps, Army of the Cumberland, until January, 1863. Following the Battle of Perryville, the 19th OVI was on march to Nashville, Tenn., from October 16-November 7, and on duty there till December 26. The 19th OVI advanced on Murfreesboro, Tenn., December 26-30 and was present at the Battle of Stones River (December 30-31, and January 1-3, 1863.) Following the Battle of Stones River the 19th OVI was on duty at Murfreesboro till June, and participated in the Middle Tennessee or Tullahoma Campaign from June 22, 1863 to July 7, 1863. The unit saw action at Liberty Gap June 22-24. On July 22, 1863 Francis Gaume was honorably discharged at McMinnville Tenn. on order of the War Dept.9 He served in Co. B 162nd Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry from May 2, 1864 to September 4, 1864.9,3,7 In 1864, the 162nd Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry, originally a Ohio National Guard Unit, was organized under Colonel Ephraim Ball for 100 days service. Forming in May, 1864, it moved into Kentucky to repel John Hunt Morgan. On May 2, 1864 Frank Gaume reenlisted at Canton, Ohio as a Private in company "B", 162nd OVI. The 162nd Regiment Infantry was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, and mustered in May 20, 1864. Camp Chase, near Columbus, was a prison camp for captured Confederate soldiers. On June 11, Companies "B," "D," "E," "G," "H" and "I" moved to Covington, Kentucky. Two companies were mounted and the Regiment did post duty at Covington and other points until the expiration of its term of service. It was mustered out September 4, 1864. Companies "A," "C," "F" and "K" on duty at Tod Barracks, Columbus, Ohio, till September 4. During the summer of 1864, the 162nd OVI was on expedition to Carrollton, Ky., in search of Moses Webster's men. It, also, performed duty at Carrollton and Covington, Ky., recruiting for the 117th United States Colored Troops and arresting prominent Rebels till September. The 162nd OVI mustered out at Camp Chase, Ohio, September 4, 1864. The regiment lost, during service, twenty enlisted men by disease. Francis Gaume was honorably discharged (active muster out) at Camp Chase, Ohio, Sept 4, 1864.9 Around October 1867, Frank Gaume married Della Pickering in the state of Wisconsin. Date is approximate and is based on statement that his first wife died 8 months after marriage. According to affidavit signed by Frank Gaume and dated March 26th, 1915, he and his first wife were married in June of 1868. In May of 1868, Frank's daughter, Della Gaume was born in Canton, Stark, Ohio. On June 2, 1868 Delia Pickering died in Louisville, Ohio. He and Jessie M. Gaume appeared on the census of 1880 in Shannon, Pottawatomie County, Kansas.10 He was a Innkeeper in St Marys, Pottawatomie County, Kansas, circa 1883. He was a prospector in Colorado circa 1890. He filed for a military pension request in 1890 in Ft. Morgan, Colorado. He witnessed the baptism of Vital Gervaise DeBacker on August 14, 1892 in Immaculate Conception Church, St Marys, Pottawatomie County, Kansas.11 He lived in Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas, circa 1900. He lived in National Solidiers Home, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1915.
