Vital Eugene Louis DeBacker was born on November 28, 1835 in Renaix, Belgium.1 He was the son of Arnauld Francois DeBacker and Sophie Francoise Callewaert. He married Hortence DeDonder, daughter of Philippe Antoine Dedonder and Rosalie Derodere, on April 17, 1861 in Renaix. He died on January 2, 1918 in St Marys, Pottawatomie County, Kansas, at age 82. He was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetary, St Marys, Pottawatomie County, Kansas.2
Vital Eugene Louis DeBacker and Hortence DeBacker were found on a passenger list on October 29, 1883 in New York City, New York,: arrived aboard SS Nederland from Antwerp, Belgium. Place of birth is shown as France (probably because they all spoke French).3 He witnessed the baptism of Victor C. DeBacker in Immaculate Conception Church, St Marys, Pottawatomie County, Kansas.4 He and Hortence DeBacker appeared on the census of 1895 in Rossville, Shawnee County, Kansas.5 He and Hortence DeBacker appeared on the census of 1900 in St Marys.6 He lived in 94 Bertrand St., St Marys, Pottawatomie County, Kansas, in 1910. He and Hortence DeBacker appeared on the census of 1910 in 94 Bertrand St., St Marys, Pottawatomie County, Kansas.7 It is not certain why the family left Belgium; however between 1879 and 1884 there was a great deal of political unrest in Belgium between the Dutch-speaking Catholic Party and the French-speaking Liberal Party. It was basically a Church-State conflict over public education, but at times the debate became violent. In 1884, the Catholic Party took power and Belgium's School War ended.
Going back through the information that my father's cousin sent me a few years ago, I came across two newspaper articles that provide some information of interest regarding the Renaix, Belgium connection. These articles were published in the St Marys Star. This is a newspaper in St Marys, Kansas that at one time was published and edited by W. E. Miller, a brother-in-law, of my g-grandfather, Dr. August DeBacker. Both articles deal with my gg-grandfather, Vital DeBacker. The first article was written in 1911 and describes the 50th wedding anniversary of Vital DeBacker and Hortence DeDonder that was celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church in St Marys, Kansas on April 3, 1911. The second article was written in 1918 and it is the obituary of Vital DeBacker. Both articles provide some clues as to Renaix, Belgium connection. My comments are in brackets [ ]. From the article entitled Rejoice In Golden Jubilee (1911) The golden jubilee of Mr. and Mrs. Vital DeBacker in our city last Monday offered occasion for the generous expression of good wishes by their many friends and relatives. Messages of regard were received from friends in three states and their old home in Belgium. [This tells me that they maintained contact with relatives in Belgium.] The ceremony of renewing the marriage vows was conducted by the Rt. Rev. Bishop Meerschaert [bishop of Oklahoma City, OK], a life long friend, and in youth a companion of the Mr. DeBacker. [Could the Rev. Meerschaert be the priest that brought the family over from Belgium?] The article then goes on to mention that two brothers of Vital DeBacker and two brothers of Hortence DeDonder were Catholic priests: Fr. Felix DeBacker, Fr. Victor DeBacker, Fr. J. B. Dedonder, and Fr. Gustave DeDonder. In my records I have as brothers of Vital DeBacker: Desne Aime Victor DeBacker b.28 Sep 1839, Felix Anne Come Francois DeBacker b. 30 Jul 1832. For Hortence DeDonder I have recorded a brother Gustave Marie DeDonder, b. 23 Sep 1853, but I have no record of a J. B. DeDonder. The article regarding the death of Vital DeBacker provides some very interesting information. Vital DeBacker died 2 Jan. 1918 at age 82. Pall bearers are listed as R. DenHaerynek, A. Ghysbrecht, Peter Ronsse, A. L. Verschelden, Theo. Stockman, and John Erhbacher. [Belgian surnames?] From the obituary: Born in Renaix, Belgium, Oct 28, 1835 of Francis and Marie DeBacker, his earlier years were at the College of St Anthony Of Padua in Renaix and the College of Leuze after which he assisted his father as a flour miller in Renaix. On April 3, 1861 he was united in marriage to Hortense DeDonder at the church of St Hermes in Renaix by Dean Fr. Motiers. He operated a general store and conducted the mill until 1882 when they moved to America purchasing the farm which they still own southwest of town In 1899 they purchased a home in town and retired from the farm. A college companion of the Rt.Rev. Bishop Meerschaert [see above] their early friendship was frequently renewed during their lifetime a lover of horses his early life was spent in horsemanship and sports. A man who enjoyed good humor and pleasantry: his hearty, genial ways caused the friends of the passing years to breathe a prayer of sadness as they felt the loss in death of this fine old gentleman [Obviously they are talking about a Belgian!]. He and John B. DeBacker may have been related.

Family Of Geraldine O'Malley
Martin O'Malley was born circa 1825 in Ireland.1 He married Anna Kirby circa 1841. He died say 1890 in Minnesota.
Martin O'Malley immigrated circa 1840 to Canada. He emigrated circa 1855 from Canada.2 He was a Farmer in Minnesota in 1860. He and Anna Kirby appeared on the census of 1860 in Austin PO, Brooklyn twnshp, Mower County, Minnesota.3 He and Anna Kirby appeared on the census of 1870 in Austin PO, Windom twnshp, Mower County, Minnesota.4 The O'Malley name is Norman in origin and dates back at least to the time of Henry II of England (grandson of William the Conquer) and the Norman invasion of Ireland in 1170 AD. It was the Norman conquerors of the British Isles that introduced the widespread use of family surnames. The name means literally "son of the hammer" and probably descends from a Norman lord that ruled County Mayo in the 12th C. Probably the most famous (or infamous) O'Malley in history is the Irish female pirate, Grace O'Malley (Granuaile). There is little doubt that the family of my grandmother came from Ireland, but from where exactly in Ireland is not known. We know that they came to America by way of Canada; my great-grandfather, Patrick O'Malley having been born near Montreal, Canada around 1851. The family most likely came to the Americas in the late 1840's as a result of the potato famine that devastated Ireland from 1847 to 1849. It has been said that a million Irish died and that a million Irish left for America during the famine. The population of Ireland in 1845 was 2 1/2 million. We know that the O'Malley family eventually settled in Minnesota and this most likely was in the late 1860's, after the American Civil War and the pacification of the Sioux. They settled in or around the city of Rochester, Minnesota and worked either as farmers or railway men. The O'Malleys probably settled in the St Bridget Catholic Church area, about 6 miles south of Rochester. From the 1900 census record we learn that Patrick O'Malley was born in Canada and emmigrated to the U.S. 45 years earlier. If the family came to the US in 1855 they should appear in the US census record in 1860. I would not expect to find them in Minnesota as earlier as 1860 and in fact I do not find them there in that year. A search of the 1860 census records for the O'Malley family turns up a few possibilities, but nothing that I found really matches what I have recorded in the way of names, ages, and place of birth. Candidate families were found in Chicago, Boston, up-state New York (Chatauqua), and New York City. It is most likely that by 1870 they were in Minnesota, but a search of the 1870 census for O'Malley and variations of the surname does not find them. There is an indication that parts of the census of Minnesota in 1870 are either missing or not readily available. Some of the daughters of Patrick O'Malley were born in Iowa in the 1880's and the family had settled in Kansas by the early 1890's; however I was not able to locate the family in the census records prior to 1900.
In January, 2006 I was able to locate the family of Martin and Anne O'Malley in the US Census of 1860 in Brooklyn township, Mower Co., Minnesota. Brooklyn township is now Windom township and this would place them in the area of Rose Creek. Further research possiblities include St. Peter's Church records and St. Peter's cemetary (both in Rose Creek). Also found Martin and Anne in same place in 1870 and found Peter O'Malley here, as well, in 1900.
