Descendants of John Dobbs
     Asa Dobbs was born on July 31, 1801 in Elbert County, Georgia. He was the son of Josiah Dobbs and Susannah ___. He married Frances McMullen, daughter of Patrick McMullan and Sarah Walker, on October 18, 1826 in Elbert County, Georgia.2 He died on August 28, 1854 in Cartersville, Georgia, at age 53.
     Asa Dobbs appeared on the census of 1830 in Elbert County, Georgia.3 He appeared on the census of 1840 in District 898, Cobb County, Georgia.4 He and Frances McMullen appeared on the census of 1850 in Big Shanty, Cobb County, Georgia.5 The 1830 tax records of Elbert County, Georgia, show Asa with two slaves. Also in Elbert County at that time were Silas, Elijah, Jesse and David Dobbs. The 1840 tax records of Cobb County, Georgia, show Asa with 11 slaves. Next door to him was Peter Dobbs (then in his 60s and believed to be an uncle). The 1848 tax records of Cobb County show Asa Dobbs with 22 slaves. The 1850 tax records of Cobb County show Asa living in the Big Shanty (now Kennesaw) area with wife Frances. Also living with them were John M. (22), William S. (14), Elizabeth M. (2) and Sarah J. (9). Value of his estate at the time was $15,000. By 1851, the tax records show him with 26 slaves and 236 acres of land. In that year, he was living in the Big Shanty (now Kennesaw) area of the county. Asa died in 1854 and is buried in Friendship Presbyterian Cemetery, Cartersville, Georgia. Tax records of Cass County, Georgia, (Cartersville), in 1860 show his widow Frances, then 51, working as a seamstress in Cartersville. Living with her were Susan (21), Mary E. (13) and Emma F (9). She was taxed on $1,000 in real estate and $350 in personal property. Also in Cass in 1860 are J. Dobbs (32), E. Dobbs (22) and F. Dobbs (14). By 1870, the name of Cass County had been changed to Bartow County. Frances Dobbs (then 64) was living with a woman named Calinda (age 27), possibly the widow of William S. Dobbs. John A. Dobbs (10) also was living there. By 1880, Frances Dobbs had moved in with her son, John M. Dobbs.1

     Frances McMullen was born on July 1, 1806 in Elbert County, Georgia. She was the daughter of Patrick McMullan and Sarah Walker. She married Asa Dobbs, son of Josiah Dobbs and Susannah ___, on October 18, 1826 in Elbert County, Georgia.2 She died on April 12, 1900 in Cartersville, Georgia, at age 93.
     Her married name was Dobbs. She and Asa Dobbs appeared on the census of 1850 in Big Shanty, Cobb County, Georgia.3 From her obituary in an unnamed area newspaper (The Journal), April 12, 1900: "Mrs. Franci(e)s Dobbs Dead.- A Remarkable Woman and One of the Oldest Citizens of Bartow County - (Special Dispatch to the Journal) CARTERVILLE, Ga., April 12 -- A most remarkable woman, Mrs. Frances Dobbs, was laid to rest yesterday in the cemetery. She was born in July 1806, and had she lived until next July she would have been 95 years old. She has outlived all of her family and even all of her children. Her mind has been perfectly clear up to last Saturday, and she could talk intelligently of events happening in the early years of the century. Her death occurred Monday night, the result of a wearing out of her life. She is survived by John H. Dobbs, Mrs. T.A. Haney, John A., W.G., J.M. and C.C. Dobbs, Mrs. Todd and Miss Anna Dobbs, her grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. She was born in Elbert County and has been a member of the Baptist Church since 1854. She was the widow of Asa Dobbs, who moved to Bartow County 60 years ago and lived here 20 years [actually about 14] before his death."

     David Milton Dobbs appeared on the census of 1850 in the household of Jesse Dobbs and Mary Prothro in Elbert County, Georgia.5 He began military service on May 16, 1861 in Georgia 3rd Corporeal, CSA.6

Pace, of Atlanta. He has friends and relatives in Elbert county who will be pained to learn of his death. His great desire was to see America win the great struggle through which it is passing.".

     Lodowick Dobbs and John Dobbs lived in Wilkes County, North Carolina, in 1782.2 He was found on Petit Jury list in 1792 in Pendleton District, South Carolina.3 He appeared on the census of 1800 in Pendleton District, South Carolina.4 Some sources suggest that Lodowick Dobbs was a son of Fortune Dobbs.5

     Josiah Dobbs appeared on the census of 1840 in Lumpkin County, Georgia.3 Josiah Dobbs was also known as Joseph Dobbs. He and Elizabeth Prothro appeared on the census of 1850 in Big Shanty, Cobb County, Georgia.4 The 1848 tax records of Cobb County, GA, show Josiah with 10 slaves. By 1851, he lived in the Big Shanty (now Kennesaw) District and owned 11 slaves and 240 acres.
