George C. Spiegel was also known as George C. Von Spiegel. He emigrated in 1850 from Sachsen, Germany.2,6 George may have arrived in America in 1854: Georg Caspar Spiegel, age 14, appears on passenger list arriving in New York on 6 October 1854 on board the SS Coriolan via Bremen, Germany. His place of origin is listed as Saxony. Listed with him are Paulus Spiegel (46), Magdelena Spiegel (36), Martin Spiegel (12), Catherine Spiegel (9), and John Gottlieb Spiegel (7). It is not known if Georg Caspar Spiegel and George C. Spiegel are the same person.7 He was naturalized in 1860.6
He may have served in the military during the Civil War. A number of George Spiegel's are found listed: George Spiegel E 45th N. Y. Infantry, George Spiegel E 58th N. Y. Infantry, George Spiegel 65th 2 Batt'n Veteran Res. Corps, George W. Spiegel 141st 2 Batt'n Veteran Res. Corps, and a George Spiegel who enlisted at New York on 22 September 1862.8

Sophie Spiegel was born in New York, so it is likely that the pair came from New York before moving to Georgia and later to Texas. In the census indices for New York in 1860 is the following entry: US Census - New York - 1860 - New York - 8th Ward NYC Dist 2 - pg 66; H: Bernard Spiegel - 40 - Cigar Maker - Germany; W: Caroline Spiegel - 38 - Germany; S: William Spiegel - 9 - New York; D: Wilhelmina Spiegel - 4 - New York; D: Eliza Spiegel - 3 - New York; U: George Whittman - 18 - Cigar Maker - Germany (Are George Whittman and George C. Spiegel the same person?).
He was a Cigar Manufacturer in Savannah, Georgia, in 1870.1 He was a Cigar Maker in Dallas, Texas, in 1880. He resided in Dallas, Texas, about 1890.9,10,11
