Newton Dobbs was born on February 5, 1840 in Georgia.1 He was the son of Lodowick Dobbs and Deliah Dobbs. He married Sarah Jane Moore on January 20, 1867 in Bartow County, Georgia.1 He died on October 17, 1896 in Cartersville, Georgia, at age 56.2

He served in company F, 23d regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry, C. S. A. Dobbs, Newton- private August 31, 1861 . Captured at Chancellorsville, Va. May 3, 1863 . Exchanged at City Point, Va. May 23, 1863 . Roll for April 30, 1864 , last on file, shows him present.3,4
