He and Louis Jeanin-Gaume appeared as neighbors on the census of 1850 in Stark County, Ohio.1 In the US Census 1850 Nimishillen Twshp., Stark Cty., Ohio, pg. 469b the head-of-household is shown as the 24 yr. old Joseph Gaume followed by the 58 yr. Mathias, yet the real property value of $800 is listed for Mathias, and there are two Josephs listed in this family. The four males in this family were all occupied as farmers. The probate court records for Stark Co. list the will of Melchior Gaume which was probated on 22 Jan 1850. The will lists the sons of Melchior as Francois Joseph and Augustus Prospere. The Joseph and August listed with Mathias may have been sons of Melchior Gaume.
